The best Letterboxd alternative depends on what you’re missing. Want movies and TV in one tracker? Trakt or Simkl. A Letterboxd-style community for TV? Serializd. Recommendations from people who rate like you? Criticker or Taste. Where to stream? JustWatch. Want a “what next?” list from your Letterboxd history? goodrecmovies.

TV Time has shut down. TV Time stopped working after July 15, 2026. The apps were pulled and personal data was deleted (TechCrunch). If you saved your export before then, Trakt (import guide), Serializd, Simkl and goodrecmovies can still take it. See each entry below.

The picks
Letterboxd: when to stay
Letterboxd is still the best social film diary, with dated diary entries, reviews, lists and a huge film-first community. Pro is $19/yr and Patron $49/yr (USD, excl. tax, letterboxd.com/pro). There are apps for iPhone/iPad, Android and Apple TV (letterboxd.com/apps), and it imports from IMDb and its own CSV format (importing data).
- Stay if: the diary and the community are the point.
- Look elsewhere if: you want TV tracking, streaming-first discovery, or a different kind of recommendation.
Trakt
Tracks movies and TV episodes, with scrobbling from media centers and streaming services. It has a built-in importer for IMDb, Letterboxd and TV Time (App Store description; Trakt forum: importer).
- Pricing (October 2026): free plan; VIP $5.99/month or $59.99/year (US App Store in-app purchases, apps.apple.com). Legacy prices moved to the standard rate from June 12, 2025 (forum).
- Recent changes: in January 2025, free accounts were capped at 100 watchlist items and 2 lists of 100 (announcement). In February 2026, Trakt raised the free watchlist and per-list caps to 250 and published a free-vs-VIP limits table, for example 5 personal lists free vs 100 on VIP (announcement). Plex Sync and Streaming Sync are VIP (trakt.tv/apps).
- Pro: the deepest movie + TV tracker, with a big app ecosystem.
- Con: the free caps on watchlists and lists have changed more than once, so check them before you move a big Letterboxd watchlist.
Simkl
Tracks TV, anime and movies. Free users can import watch history from 20+ services, Letterboxd included, by uploading the Letterboxd ZIP export (Simkl docs, simkl.com/apps/import). It auto-tracks from Plex (needs Plex Pass, or Tautulli as a workaround), a Kodi add-on and Emby (Plex, Kodi docs).
- Pricing (October 2026, simkl.com/vip): PRO $34.99/yr (shown as $2.91/mo); VIP $34.99 every 6 months (shown as $5.83/mo); Lifetime VIP $249 one-time. Simkl says PRO is free if you visit 20+ days a month.
- Pro: movies, shows and anime in one place, and it takes the Letterboxd ZIP as-is.
- Con: lighter on the film-community and review culture Letterboxd is known for.
Serializd
The “Letterboxd for TV”: track shows, rate and review episodes and seasons, keep a TV diary, follow friends. It’s completely free, with optional Patreon support (no ads for patrons). It imports from TV Time and Trakt, and runs on web, iOS and Android (serializd.com, Patreon).
- Pro: the closest thing to Letterboxd’s vibe, for television.
- Con: TV only, so your film history stays somewhere else.
Criticker
Recommendations matched to people whose ratings track yours. It has a Letterboxd import page (criticker.com/import).
- Pro: recommendations built on taste similarity, not popularity.
- Con: a smaller, more utilitarian community than Letterboxd.
Taste (taste.io)
Rate movies and shows, add your streaming services, and get picks from users with similar taste. There’s also a partner mode for picking together. The app is free, with Premium in-app purchases at $2.99/month, or $11.99 or $19.99 a year (US App Store listing, apps.apple.com). Android app on Google Play.
- Pro: fast, swipe-style taste building with streaming filters.
- Con: we couldn’t confirm an official Letterboxd import, so plan on re-rating.
JustWatch
A streaming guide with a watchlist, seen-tracking and custom lists. Free users get 2 custom lists and Pro gets 100 (support). Pro removes ads and adds filters such as IMDb vote count and runtime (support). The US App Store lists JustWatch Pro at $3.99 (apps.apple.com). The listing doesn’t show the billing period.
- Pro: the best answer to “where can I stream this?”
- Con: not a diary or a community.
IMDb (watchlist and ratings)
The biggest database, with a free watchlist and ratings. You can export your ratings to CSV from Your Ratings (IMDb help), and Letterboxd can import IMDb exports (Letterboxd).
- Pro: everything is on it, and the export is easy.
- Con: it’s not a social diary, and we couldn’t confirm an official way to bring a Letterboxd history in.
MUBI
A curated arthouse streaming service with its own film database and ratings. MUBI Classic (US) is $14.99/month or $119.88/year, with a 7-day free trial. MUBI GO is $19.99/mo or $167.88/yr and adds a weekly cinema ticket in select cities (mubi.com/memberships).
- Pro: it actually plays the films, and they’re hand-picked.
- Con: it’s a paid streaming service, not a tracker, and has no official Letterboxd import (only community scripts).
goodrecmovies
Import your Letterboxd in about 2 minutes, ratings and watchlist included.
- What it is: a catalog of well-rated movies and series, so you browse the good ones, not the filler.
- How to import: export your data from Letterboxd, then upload the whole ZIP, or just one CSV, at goodrecmovies.com/import. Files can be up to about 4 MB. It's free with a Google sign-in, as listed on /pricing, and re-importing never creates duplicates.
- What comes over:
watched.csvlands in your watched history.ratings.csvanddiary.csvcome over as watched, with your rating.watchlist.csvgoes to your watchlist, skipping anything you've already watched.- Ratings map to our scale: 4½–5★ becomes love, 3–4★ becomes like, and ½–2½★ becomes dislike.
- What doesn't: reviews, lists, likes and watch dates. Only titles in our catalog can match. When the import finishes, you get a summary and a list of anything that didn't match.
- Other imports: Trakt (ZIP or JSON) works too. So does a TV Time CSV you saved before it shut down, on a best-effort, experimental basis.
- What you get: personalized suggestions from your history; Taste DNA (a free teaser, full on Pro); your watchlist; reviews with spoiler flags and replies; follows, friends and a feed; public profiles at
/u/handle; and Match night (/movie-night) for picking a movie with a friend. - Pro plan (optional): where to watch, My services, full Taste DNA and CSV export. See /pricing.
- Pro: your Letterboxd ratings and watchlist come straight over and turn into a free “what next?” list of good films.
- Cons:
- Only titles in our catalog match, so some films you logged won't come over. The unmatched list shows you which.
- The Letterboxd import is movies only, and diary dates and review text stay behind.
- It's web only. There's no native app (it's an installable web app), no scrobbling and no episode progress.
- There's no diary and no custom lists.
FAQ
What’s the best free Letterboxd alternative? For tracking movies and TV, Simkl and Trakt both have free plans (Trakt’s has list caps). For a TV-only community, Serializd is fully free. For suggestions built from your Letterboxd ratings and watchlist, goodrecmovies’ import is free.
Can I move my Letterboxd history to another app? Yes. Letterboxd lets you export your data as a ZIP of CSV files. Simkl and goodrecmovies take the ZIP directly, and goodrecmovies brings your ratings and watchlist along. Trakt has a built-in importer too.
Is there a Letterboxd for TV shows? Serializd is the closest. Trakt and Simkl track TV too, with less of a review-community feel.
Did Trakt change its free plan? Yes. It capped free watchlists and lists in January 2025, then raised the free watchlist and per-list caps to 250 in February 2026. Check Trakt’s current limits before you migrate.
What happened to TV Time? It shut down after July 15, 2026. If you saved your export, Trakt and Serializd can import it, and goodrecmovies takes a saved TV Time CSV on a best-effort basis.
Is Letterboxd still worth it? If you love the diary, the reviews and the film community, yes. None of these alternatives replaces that social diary as well.
